Meet Arlington therapist Dr. Ann Krajewski

Even before I was a licensed clinical psychologist, I've always been curious about what makes other people tick. I feel extremely privileged to have witnessed the transformation and personal growth of so many people—it never gets old. The process can be painful and messy, but it's so worth it. I know this from my own personal experience and from taking part in it firsthand with my clients. The best part is, you don't have to do this alone. I'm here to help you navigate it from start to finish.

In session, I focus on forming a warm, genuine, trusting relationship with each of my clients. In fact, connection is one of my biggest values, both in my personal life and as a therapist. I believe that humans are built for connection, and that lack of connection is at the root of so many mental health issues people experience. You can expect me to ask lots of questions and listen attentively so I can better understand you.

Since I challenge each of my clients to continuously go deeper and get to the true core of their challenges, I do the same. I'm constantly pursuing further training, education, supervision, and my own personal therapy to help me show up as effectively as possible during our therapy sessions. While I view our time together as a mutual effort, I firmly believe that each session is ultimately yours. This is your space to make yourself be heard, and I'm committed to putting your voice first.

My approach to therapy in Arlington, VA

I take an in-depth approach to therapy. In my personal and professional experience, getting to the root of what's keeping you stuck is the most effective way to cultivate deep, meaningful change. Learning how to manage your symptoms with coping strategies and other surface-level solutions can help in the short-term, but I want you to experience the freedom that comes with true emotional healing.

As a psychoanalytic-oriented therapist, I believe that our unconscious can influence how we show up in the world. I understand that this concept can be difficult to understand or accept, especially if you're new to the therapy process. Rest assured, we'll go at a pace that feels right to you. Ultimately, this is about unraveling the threads that make up the tapestry of who you are. Together, we'll make sense of it all and discover how to weave it back together in a way that actually makes you feel good.

While I'll ask lots of questions to get the conversation going, I ultimately take a client-centered approach. This means that I follow your lead, which can feel intimidating when you're used to taking your cues from the people around you. However, connecting with your inner voice is part of the process. It will feel tough at times, but you'll leave feeling more confident than ever.

    Anxiety therapy

Do you feel constantly out of control? Maybe you have a hard time relaxing or letting your guard down, even if you can't think of anything specific you "should" be worrying about. Or maybe you notice anxiety showing up in a physical sense: tense muscles, stomaches, and chronic headaches. With anxiety therapy in Arlington, VA, you can finally feel safe and grounded in your daily life.

    Therapy for perfectionism

On the outside, it looks like you have it all together. But on the inside, you feel like a mess. You're sure that no one would ever accept you if they actually knew you. For many people, perfectionism feels impossible to break out of. Thankfully, therapy for perfectionism can help you learn how to embrace your authentic self: messy parts and all.

    Codependency therapy

If you identify with the concept of "people-pleasing," you likely struggle with codependent relationship patterns. You probably find yourself in a giving role, always acting as the "therapist friend" or trying to anticipate your partner's needs to get the reassurance you crave. Codependency therapy can teach you how to build more balanced, fulfilling relationships with the people in your life—including yourself.

    Low self-esteem therapy

You try so hard to get things right, whether it's at work, in your relationships, or elsewhere. But you constantly feel like you just can't measure up, no matter what you do. This lack of confidence has a significant impact on your quality of life, but you're not sure what else to try. With low self-esteem therapy , you can finally connect to a sense of confidence and empowerment like never before.

Getting started with therapy

Ready to jump in? Here's what you can expect from the therapy process.

Step One

Begin by booking your free 15-minute consultation. (Find a time here). We'll chat about why you're starting therapy and you'll have the chance to ask any questions you may have. This is an opportunity to get a better sense of whether we're the right fit for each other. If we decide to move forward, we'll discuss logistics like my fees, information about online therapy, and scheduling availability.

Step Two

From here, we'll have our first appointment. This is an intake session where I'll ask you lots of questions about yourself, including your current challenges and your history. This is another opportunity to better understand whether I'm the right therapist for you. We'll discuss whether we want to schedule a follow-up session during this appointment.

Step Three

Let the work begin! We'll decide how frequently to meet and start our deep dive into therapy together. This process requires a significant amount of hope, time, patience, and self-compassion. It will be difficult at times, but it will also be worth it. You'll leave with a better understanding of yourself and your needs, plus the confidence to fully embrace all of who you are.

FAQs about working with an Arlington, VA therapist

Have questions about the process? Here are some of the most common questions I receive about what to expect from working with a virtual mental health therapist in Arlington, VA. If you don't see yours here, check out my FAQ page or contact me directly.

  • I may be a bit biased, but I wholeheartedly believe that therapy is worth it—if you're willing to open yourself up to the process. For true, deep healing to occur, you need to commit to the vulnerability, ups and downs, and hard work that therapy requires.

Whether you're seeking therapy for relationship issues, low self-esteem, mental health issues like anxiety, or simply because you want to feel more fulfilled in your life, therapy can help. By getting curious about your internal experiences and learning more about what drives you, you can find meaningful change and emotional healing.

While I've witnessed this firsthand with my clients and through my own personal experience, you don't have to take my word for it. Check out this article from the American Psychological Association about the effectiveness of in-depth therapy.

  • Pretty much! Therapy can be helpful for a wide range of different issues. While my private practice focuses on helping individuals with anxiety, perfectionism, codependency, and low-self esteem, other therapists can help people in different capacities.

Some other reasons why people seek therapy include:

    • Learning life skills

    • Treatment of mental health issues like eating disorders, mood disorders, or personality disorders

    • Recovering from substance abuse

    • Navigating relationship issues or family conflict

    • Coping with stress or life transitions

    • Healing from trauma

    • Personal growth and development

    • Career-related issues

People work with therapists in Arlington, VA for all sorts of different reasons. While many people have the misconception that you need a formal mental health diagnosis to work with a therapist, that's not always the case. You also don't need to wait until your problems are "bad enough" to start counseling.

  • Choosing the best Arlington, VA therapist for your needs is a highly personal decision. Only you know what's best for you. At the same time, I recognize that difficult life experiences can make it hard to listen to your inner voice and trust your own judgment. Here are some tips for finding the right therapist for you.

Consider the type of therapist you want. In your search, you'll see therapists with different credentials. Depending on what you're looking for, you may choose to work with a licensed professional counselor, licensed clinical social worker, licensed marriage and family therapist, or licensed psychologist (like me!). Each has a different type of degree, but all have thousands of hours of training and supervised practice.

Decide which kind of therapy you're looking for. Each therapist takes a different approach, depending on their personal and professional values, background, and training. I take an in-depth, psychoanalytic approach to therapy. However, other therapists might use techniques like solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR), or a holistic approach.

Pay attention to logistics. It's also important to consider logistics when finding a therapist. Make sure to find a licensed therapist whose credentials allow them to practice in your state. You'll also want to consider online therapy vs. in-person therapy, scheduling availability, whether you want to use your insurance benefits, and more.

Schedule a free consultation. Once you've narrowed down your options, I recommend scheduling a consultation with each potential therapist. Most therapists offer free consultations so you can ask questions and get a feel for whether you're the right fit for each other. From here, you can decide how you want to move forward.

  • I am a virtual only practice, which means that our services are held over a HIPAA compliant virtual platform. Studies have shown that virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy. However, I do think personal preference can play a part in determining if it is the right fit for you.

As someone who used to live in the DMV, I know first hand how stressful the commute can be. If you have struggled to find a therapist close to your office or near your home, virtual therapy could be a great option for you to be able to commit to therapy without worrying about the time and energy it could take to commit to in-person work.

I will say that my services differ from virtual services like BetterHelp or Talkspace. I do not offer any text based therapy and I do require a weekly video appointment, which helps the effectiveness of our virtual work.
